Are You Enjoying the Journey?

Fail To Enjoy the JourneyWhen we are on a mission to accomplish a goal, it’s easy to adopt the mindset that happiness will begin when the goal is accomplished.  For example, I will be happy when I have lost all of the weight, landed the right job, can afford a certain car, have a certain amount of money in the bank, etc…  As I have told you, I think it’s extremely important to have clear-cut goals that you are working towards but I think it is equally important to enjoy your life to the fullest while you are working to achieve those goals.

I have to be honest and tell you that this was a hard concept for me to grasp at the beginning of my weight loss journey.  Back then, I had the mindset that I would be happy when the 220 lbs were gone.  Thank goodness that with lots of support I let go of that mindset considering I still have not lost the full 220 lbs yet but I sure have experienced a lot of happiness in my life over the course of my journey.  If I had held onto the “I’ll be happy when…” mentality, I would be missing out on so many wonderful things.

For a lot of years I had been beaten down (mentally) and made to feel like I was “less than worthy” because I was overweight.  I actually believed that I did not deserve to be happy.  I wonder how many of you can relate to what I am talking about.  Maybe it’s not another person making you feel like you don’t deserve to be happy; maybe you are making yourself feel that way.  I was guilty of that one too.  When I was at my heaviest, I had so much negative self-talk running through my head it was overwhelming.  So believe me when I say that I understand how easy it is to get caught up in this way of thinking; and it’s only fair for me to tell you that you won’t overcome feeling this way overnight.  The culture in this country has a way of perpetuating these thoughts of unworthiness too, so you have to be careful what you listen to.

One of the biggest driving forces behind me getting past feeling unworthy of happiness was my Dad.  My Dad has been cheering me on every step of this journey and encouraging me to celebrate every single victory, no matter how big or small.  Another thing that really helped me was surrounding myself with positive people, whether in person or through things that I read.  I receive several daily devotions via e-mail and reading them really has helped me to more positive in my own thoughts.  I guess the biggest thing that helped me was realizing how short life really is and how nothing is guaranteed so I don’t want to waste any days being unhappy just because all of my circumstances are not exactly “right.”

Letting go of this mindset allowed me to meet Michael whereas if I had been sitting at home waiting until all of the weight was gone I would have missed out on a truly wonderful man who has become one of my biggest supporters.  We have built so many wonderful memories together and we have so much fun together, I could not imagine missing out on that.  Being happy where I am at has given me the courage to pursue so many things that I might not have otherwise like starting this blog and earning my Personal Trainer and Health Coach Certifications.

One last thing I want to tell you is that the more happiness you allow yourself to experience, the easier your weight loss journey will be.  Yes, you will struggle and have rough times but the happier you allow yourself to be the easier it will be to focus on the rewards waiting for you at the end of the tunnel and not get frustrated and give up.  Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you don’t deserve to be happy just because you need to lose weight.  Enjoy every single day to the fullest and you will be amazed at how successful you will be!
