Remember To Love Yourself

Love Yourself EnoughAs we enter the month of February we are surrounded by reminders of Valentine’s Day and thoughts of love at every turn.  While most of us consider it important to love others and to have someone special in our lives to love us, we often forget how important it is to love ourselves.  I know that this may sound like a selfish thought to some (I used to be one of those people), but you really cannot imagine how important it is.

I know for me, when my weight was at its highest, I often did not feel worthy of doing good things for myself and taking time to love me. I was so concerned with taking care of everyone around me and I would care for others and try to solve all of their problems while completely neglecting myself and it was only to my detriment.  I poured myself into my job and worked an unimaginable amount of hours but in the end, the company still went out of business in the downturn of 2008.

I was thinking this morning about how important it is to love and take care of ourselves and how that is often the first thing most of us neglect doing.  I have found through my own experience that the saying, “you can’t take care of others if you don’t take care of yourself first,” really is true.  I wish I could have come to this understanding a long time ago.  I wish I could have gotten past feeling like I was being “selfish” if I focused on taking care of me first instead of others.

Taking Care of You

The older I get, the more I realize that our time here in this life really is short.  Since the amount of time we have is limited, don’t we owe it to ourselves to live the healthiest, best life possible?  The healthier we are, the happier we are and the more wonderful things we are able to enjoy in this life.  The first step is believing you are important enough to invest in; important enough to love.  It was not until I came to this realization that I could really pour myself into my weight loss efforts, and be successful.

Having been a person who put everything and everyone before me, I know how hard it can be to break this cycle.  I know that the change will not come overnight.  What I would like for you to do is pick one thing you could do this month to love and care for yourself so that you can in turn be better equipped to love and care for others.  I am going to be taking Zumba classes once a week at my church for the month of February.  It will be an hour a week just for me and I will be fitting in some different exercise to switch up my routine.  Let me know what you will be doing for you this month.
