Planning for Summer Success

Keep Calm Stay on PlanI don’t know about you, but I can hardly believe it is the middle of June!  Where is this year going?  I swear it seems like Christmas was just a few weeks ago and the first official day of summer is in just a few days.  For many people summer means vacations (or staycations), family reunions, picnics, backyard barbeques, and maybe even people coming to stay with you.  All of these events are fun but they all have the potential to get you off plan.  There is absolutely no reason that summer fun should derail your weight loss efforts.  You can have fun and still lose weight (or at least maintain your current weight).

Over the weekend, Michael and I went out to the ballpark to enjoyed America’s favorite pastime and take in a Braves game.  As you know, a trip to the ballpark can derail even the most dedicated person’s weight loss efforts if they aren’t careful.  However, I have learned over the course of my journey that you don’t have to sacrifice fun events that you love to avoid sabotaging your weight loss.  All it takes is a little bit of planning and you can enjoy the best of both worlds.

As my Atlanta readers know, it is somewhat of a tradition to eat at The Varsity in downtown Atlanta anytime you go to a hometown sporting event.  If you are familiar with The Varsity, you know that they are famous for hot dogs, hamburgers, French fries, onion rings, milkshakes, etc…  None of these are exactly good choices if you are trying to lose weight (or even maintain a healthy weight).  What you may not know is that The Varsity has a delicious grilled chicken salad.  Who knew?  Not me, until I ate there for the first time after starting my weight loss journey.  Michael is positive that I am the only person to ever order this item from their menu and that may be true, but even if I am, that’s okay.  In the past, I would have ordered the exact same meal that Michael gets at The Varsity, two chili dogs and French fries and if I was like Michael and didn’t have a weight problem, I would still order that meal.  However, I cannot justify the 26 Points Plus® that this meal would cost me when I can have the delicious grilled chicken salad with light Italian dressing for 5 Points Plus®.  It’s all about choices.  I, like most native Atlantans love to go to The Varsity for “the experience,” so I can go and enjoy myself and still stay on plan because half the fun for me is just being there.

I packed a bag of healthy snacks to take to the ballpark and we were able to snack on grapes, apple slices, cheese, and a few peanuts and stay hydrated with our own drinks without breaking the monetary bank or my Points Plus® bank.

What I would like for all of you to take away from this post is that it is possible to have lots of fun this summer and go any place you would like to go and still be successful on your weight loss journey.  The key to this success is PLANNING whether it be packing your own snacks (which I say you should ALWAYS do; I never leave the house without snacks because you never know what might happen and the last thing you need is to be caught off guard without healthy food) or researching restaurants online before you go so you know what your best options are.  Some people are turned off when I talk about the work associated with weight loss but I always say, “If you want it bad enough, you won’t mind doing the work.”  Let me know how you are planning to succeed this summer.
